Worry Has Been Doing Your Planning for You

Anxiety is very good at making sure nothing gets missed. It thinks ahead, runs every version of how things could go, and keeps track of everything and everybody.

Something new always needs watching, so the worry never gets to put its feet up.

When you worry about a lot of things at once, it starts to get in the way of enjoying your life. All that worrying puts real distance between you and the life you’re living.

Why Worry Keeps You at Arm’s Length from Your Own Life

Worry lives a step ahead of the present. Its attention is on what could go wrong next, so very little of you is left for what is actually happening.

Every time a worry catches a problem early, your mind gives it a bit of credit and reaches for it a little faster the next time. Over time, living ahead of yourself becomes a habit, and right now turns into a place you pass through on the way to the next thing.

That’s the distance you feel in the middle of plans you looked forward to, and in conversations you were only half there for.

Slow Down Long Enough to See Where Your Worry Begins

Our work together starts by slowing down. We’ll notice the patterns that keep you distant from your own life: when the worry shows up, what sets it off, and what it tells you will happen if you let something go.

I use cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, to trace how a worried thought turns into an action, like the extra check or the backup plan for the backup plan. From there, we pick a small action to do differently and see what your day is like with it.

Mindfulness works from another direction. It is the practice of giving your full attention to a small, ordinary moment, like a meal or a conversation, and bringing that attention back each time worry pulls it forward.

Start Small and Let It Spread

Your mind gets better at whatever it rehearses, and worry has had plenty of rehearsal. Each small moment of attention gives presence a turn.

With enough of those turns, coming back to the moment you’re in takes less effort. It starts showing up at work, at home, and in all of your relationships.

The planning still gets done. You get to be there for more of your own life while it happens.
